This is another experimental page, this time in my small Dylusions journal. I’m trying to work out the correct ratio of balance to an asymmetrical page layout. Can I get the balance right.
Balance could be a great way of trying to get to grips with working with white space. I feel more at ease with a layout of this nature where the colour and image cluster on the left seems to balance out the weight of the white space on the right. It’s more a gut instinctive feeling of completeness rather than being off kilter.
This I feel at ease with, this I can handle! This configuration seems solidly weighted and the white space around it seems to help hold it all together.
Maybe this white space anxiety isn’t going to be too much of a problem after all!

Negative space is good, but I don’t think it has to be white; just a space where there is peace. Like sometimes a sky, water or ground can be used as negative space….the place where there isn’t anything really going on to focus on. All of that artsy fartsy stuff aside, is that your dog when he was a puppy? He is just the sweetest!

I agree space can be any colour, but then you have variations in colour depth and coverage that no longer make it empty and yes that is my Bentley when he was just 8 weeks old.😀

Love the blue edging. It looks like you are mastering several options of white space peacemaking. Are you looking to settle into a specific style or going through a phase or doing a white space journal or what? How will you know your white space aversion therapy is complete?

Good question, I’m considering a white space journal, but that would be a bit limiting, I suppose I may just keep going and use all of my journals until I stop thinking about white space at all and instinctively include it where it’s needed.

I also struggle with white space but I actually love it in a painting… It is a concept that sounds so much easier to do than it really is. We have to keep those eyes happy. lol
